The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) is a strategic response to the need for surgeons in Africa. PAACS is a non-denominational, multinational service organization training African physicians to become general surgeons who are willing to remain in Africa to meet that need. Training is offered at several well-established evangelical mission hospitals in Africa, under the direction of experienced, board certified missionary surgeons. Nine PAACS African training programs in general surgery are presently active in Gabon, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Niger, Egypt, Tanzania, Kenya and Malawi utilizing ten different hospitals. We also have a pediatric general surgery-training program and an orthopedic surgery-training program, each at a different Kenyan hospital. Ancillary training sites (for specialty rotations) are in Kenya and South Africa. One additional program is again functioning in Bangladesh and we are looking at other possible training sites in Africa. There have been a total of 37 general surgery graduates and 6 pediatric surgeons from the program working in various parts of Africa or are fellows in the pediatric surgical program.
