Media Release: His Excellency Dr. Neil Parsan, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago hosts informational sessions on Essential Surgery: Raising Awareness for the Neglected Surgical Patient, in collaboration with the G4 Alliance
Over the period December 02 to 03, 2014, Ambassador Parsan invited Ambassadors and their representatives of different regional groupings to attend informational sessions on neglected surgical conditions, a cross cutting issue that impacts over two billion people worldwide. In this effort, Ambassador Parsan worked alongside the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma and Anesthesia Care (The G4 Alliance) for which he serves as the Chair of the Honorary Council.
At these sessions, Ambassador Parsan and the G4 Alliance team of Dr. Fizan Abdullah, Dr. Jaymie Ang Henry and Ms. Mira Mehes, provided background on the urgent, global need for essential surgery. They also called on the participants to take action to assist in raising awareness of this important issue which contributes disproportionately to death, disability and poverty in countries around the globe. In framing the issue of essential surgery, the G4 Alliance team prepared and presented a 10 minute clip from the film “The Right to Heal” which can be accessed via https://vimeo.com/85783793.
Following these sessions Ambassador Parsan was able to secure the commitment of several other Ambassadors to serve as members of the Honorary Council. In addition, all participants were asked to assist in empowering their respective countries to become advocates for increased access to essential surgical care through dialogue at the World Health Assembly and to support the prioritization of surgical care as part of the inter-governmental process regarding the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.
